EP69: Transforming plastic bottles into beachwear - Fair Harbor
In Good Hands
Fair Harbor Clothing on In Good Hands

Background

The fashion industry creates over 150 million pieces of new clothing each year. This amount to ~2.5 billion pounds of used clothing ending up in landfills annually. Fashion is also the second-largest polluter of water - The Ellen MacArthur Foundation found the industry dumps nearly a half million tons of plastic microfibers into the ocean each year — the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles.

Solution

Inspired by this problem, siblings Jake and Caroline Danehy founded Fair Harbor, a clothing company that makes swimsuits and beach apparel from recycled plastic bottles.

Episode Brief

Fair Harbor Co-Founder and CEO Jake Danehy joins Peter on this week’s episode to explore:

  • Figuring out how to turn plastic into swimsuits

  • How a college pitch competition funded the launch of Fair Harbor

  • Co-founding the company with his younger sister

  • Traveling to over 500 trunk shows

  • Upcycling millions of plastic bottles
