Jin Shin Jyutsu is an art of harmonizing the life energy of the body. It was rediscovered in the early 1900's in Japan by Jiro Murai, who saved himself from a fatal illness and subsequently dedicated his life to developing, studying, and teaching the art. His chief student, Mary Burmeister, was a young Japanese American whom he charged with bringing the gift of Jin Shin Jyutsu over to America. She did so in the 1950's and since then, Jin Shin Jyutsu has spread world-wide, being taught now in over 23 different countries to well over 13,000 students.
Jin Shin Jyutsu is considered a "physio-philosophy," which means that it is more than just a type of body-work; it is a way of life. It can be performed on the self or by a trained practitioner. It works through holding certain places on each side of the body, known in Jin Shin Jyutsu as Safety Energy Locks. There are 26 Safety Energy Locks on the right side of the body and 26 on the left. In a Jin Shin Jyutsu session, the practitioner applies her hands (over clothing) to the client's Safety Energy Locks in any number of specific sequences to facilitate the release of blocks to optimal energy flow. Such blocks are acquired through the tensions and stresses of every day living, and can be caused by any number of abuses to the body or mind: improper nutrition, habitual bad posture, stressful lifestyle, pollution, or negative mindset. One will often notice after treatment that not only has the body profoundly relaxed, but the mind and spirit are more relaxed and positive as well.
Part of what In Good Hands' Jin Shin Jyutsu Practitioner, Meredith Harrison, loves so much about Jin Shin Jyutsu is its accessibility; it can be performed by anyone who is shown which place on the body to hold, and results can be felt almost immediately. Also, its tenant of self-help is appealing. Clients can be taught to work on themselves at home so that they no longer experience the pain or symptoms that originally led them to seek assistance. And if nothing else, people acknowledge a deep sense of relaxation after a Jin Shin Jyutsu session that is healing and beneficial. With the abundance of research linking well-being to stress-reduction nowadays, who couldn't use a good dose of Jin Shin Jyustu?
